The walk up to the main house on the Carr ranch was full of the sounds of the forest and fields coming to life in the early morning sun. The silences that came between Shilo and Mazin carried longing looks and aborted comforting gestures.

Shilo had risen to an empty bed and shouting in the yard. He'd hurried to dress, making sure to take a few pills before peeking out one of the windows. Mazin and Zak were side by side on the porch with Pallik and someone else standing at the bottom of the stairs. Gusts of wind cut through the heat as the sun rose behind lingering storm clouds. Shilo had a good guess that the breeze wasn't natural. Not with the way Mazin was shouting and Zak was barely holding himself back from joining him.

He rested his hand on the door handle, but didn't press the latch. He could hear Mazin and wondered if maybe it would be better for him to stay out of sight.

"I don't know what you expect me to do, Father. I can't turn back time."

Ah, so the new guy was Jutous Carr, Mazin's father and the current family patriarch. Shilo didn't feel bad for the fear that twisted in his stomach, sending a shiver up his spine. Jutous was dangerous. Shilo knew it after all the talk from the night before about kill orders and pressuring his own son to carry them out.

"No, but you can get rid of him."

Shilo choked on his simmering anger. Before he could think the door swung open and he was staring in shock at the four Elementals. They turned as the door banged off the side of the cabin.

"Get rid of me?" He shouldered his way between Mazin and Zak, and caught them having a silent but quick conversation with their eyes. Shilo didn't give a damn right then, he had a man before him that needed to be taken down a peg or two. Shilo knew Jutous could strike him down. Or even set him on fire... or fling him into a tree—depending on his element of choice—but he'd been awake on and off all night thinking over everything Mazin had confessed.

Jutous was not someone he cared to see have any more influence over his or Mazin's life.

He wasn't going to be put off by how much they looked alike either. The entire family was so similar; Shilo wondered just how insular Elementals were. It would make their drama over Mazin's break from them make much more sense.

No one answered his question, instead they just stood in the dying breezes and looked at each other, Shilo asked again, "Get rid of me how? Jutous? Right? Nice to finally meet my father-in-law." Jutous winced, his yellowed eyes squinting and his mouth pinched shut. "Guess you can't say the same. Then again, I'd be embarrassed to be you too."

"Shilo," Mazin scolded from behind him. He sounded like he was holding back a laugh.

"No," he turned and cut Mazin an unimpressed glare.
